Phonics Screening

 Phonics Screening

The teaching of phonics (the sounds letters make) and reading is well organised and based effectively on well-thought-out approaches, which are applied across the school. This ensures pupils make good progress in their reading from year to year. (Ofsted June 2015)

There is a now a statutory assessment for all children in Year 1 called the phonics screening check. Since 2012, all year 1 pupils take this assessment each June. The check contained a mix of 40 real words and nonsense words and is designed to see whether children are able to decode words using phonics.
