Careers Week – Royal Navy Submarine!

We had a visit from Dave who used to work on submarines in the Royal Navy.

He told us about lots of different jobs aboard a submarine like a chef, a waiter, an engineer, a secretary, a dental assistant, medical assistant (which was Dave’s job), an aircraft officer and a communications specialist.

To train in the navy it takes 10 weeks at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall. You have to learn to march and go on ships and submarines.

You need to get really good qualifications at school and its a good idea to learn how to swim.

You can spend 3 years on a submarine learning  and doing about 4 different jobs.

Q.How fast can a submarine go?

A.About 25 MPH

Q.How long can a sub stay under water?

A.For as long as it needs to as long as you have enough food and the air machine is working.

Q.Where does the toilet water go when you flush it?

A.The water goes into a big tank and then when its full it gets emptied into the sea.

Q.How do you drive without windows?

A.We use a machine called a sonar that bounces sound off objects.

Q.How do the breaks work?

A.There is a big tank full of air and it gets released and then that pushes you up to the surface.

So if you want to be in the Navy you can get to travel the world for free and also get paid for it but there is no internet and you can’t contact your family because there’s no signal under the sea.

Dave also showed the children a few photos of when he went to the North Pole.
